Suicide Attempt in an 8-Year-Old Boy by Hanging Himself Three Times: Case Report

Suicidal behavior in children under the age of 10 years is a warning and worrying phenomenon. This phenomenon can be an important indicator for evaluating the mental health of individuals in community. This study presents an 8-year-old boy who had past history of suicide attempt by hanging three times. The childchr('39')s psychiatric counseling identified that he had Major depression disorder (neglected depression). Evaluation of child behavior by the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) completed by the parents showed that this child had the highest scores, in aggressive behavioral disorder, attention problems, law-breaking behavior, and depression/anxiety disorder, respectively. Lack of attention or inability of parents to meet needs and create supportive nurturing environment, may lead to behavioral-emotional disorders in the child and risky behaviors such as attempting suicide in the child.
